International Day of Older Persons 2021: Meet Sukumaran Palaiyah, our 61-years-young and dynamic team-lead

Most professionals we meet in our lifetime are the ones that specialize in a specific domain- they may be the stalwarts in this one. Our understanding of someone getting senior (in terms of age) is based on our perception of the person’s education, qualification and largely based on experience! However, one thing we must focus on is how human beings evolve with time.

What if we told you that a career path could be quite different for different people? Sukumaran Palaiyah (whom we lovingly call Sugu), our Business Development & Project Manager has a completely different narrative about his expertise and career!

A human is not a resource but an amalgamation of interests, growth, changes, and skills. Skills can be harnessed and capabilities can be honed.

After working for 35+ years of proven track record in Business Development, Operations, Supply Chain, and Project Management, when he joined Sambaash about two years ago, it seemed like quite a task to un-learn and re-learn quite a few skills. However, today, it can be safely said that he is one of the most hard-working, focussed as well a dedicated team member of our company.

Core pluses

When you hire someone with a pool of experience, one of the things they do is, being good with adapting to the new environment, coping with new challenges, and championing various causes.

“Sugu’s vast experience of the business world, his network of contacts, and the sheer amount of self-learnt skills have been of immense help to Sambaash in more than one way. He helps to define strategies for the development of business in new markets and thereby execute the regional expansion of Sambaash even in the challenging covid19 impacted the business climate,” said Giridhar Nayak, Founder & CEO of Sambaash.

Currently, Sugu is leading the biz development for regional growth. Before assuming this role, he had championed the ISO 27001:2013 certification project while being a mentor to young talents. His sharing of his reservoir of experience and immense good energy & vibes- has been very crucial in the new norm of WFH.

Sugu began his journey with Sambaash as a project and account manager in the Client Services Team, and his work involved a lot of conversations, problem-solving skills, and more importantly, ISO 27001: 2013 audits and certification thereof. Given his sheer hard work and zest to learn he has been able to quickly transition into the  Biz development and Sales role, where he is leveraging his expertise.

Senior-Friendly & Flexi working policies

At Sambaash, we invest in training for people of all ages. We believe that lifelong learning is essential for our older team members to keep up with the current trend and innovation developments, including the skills for digital collaborative WFH. Not only have we published the policy for WFH, but we have also kept revising it along the way based on the evolving situation.

1. Working on flexible hours has helped our team to be more proactive and responsive.

2. We also review and reorganize job responsibilities to improve productivity and satisfaction, while rolling out various programs for the well-being of our team members.

3. We offer flexibility for our team members to attend to daily errands & the needs of families thereby accommodating different working hours across the team members.

4. Remote working conditions have been made available for our employees across the globe and different time zones through the use of collaboration tools.

5. Moreover, many of our team members are of different age groups and strongly encourage a healthy gender parity at work.

“Sambaash gives me the opportunity to adapt to the new digital world and to continually use my energy and experience to help the company advance in its mission of transforming the future of learning with its disruptive transformative solutions for the education and corporate workforce learning sector,” said Sugu.

Amidst the pandemic, while our employees as well families of employees fell sick due to corona or so, the company maintained that they were all given full salaries as well as time to recuperate fully- a decision made to comfort and secure employees & its trust.

Takeaway

We are glad to share that these measures have helped us not only in providing one of the most friendly environments to grow in but also in having a workplace that is a space for non-judgmental growth - professional & personal alike.
